Roman Gods

The Romans left religious altars all over Scotland so we know what gods they worshipped. Here are some of the Gods named on altars found in Scotland.

  • Jupiter the Leader of the Gods
  • Juno the Goddess of women and wife to Jupiter
  • Minerva the Goddess of wisdom and the arts
  • Neptune the God of Water
  • Mercury the God of Communication
  • Mars the God of War
  • Fortuna the Goddess of Fate
  • Victory the Goddess of victory
  • Hercules the God of strength and heroism

Some oriental gods were also worshipped in Britain. A temple to Mithras, a Persian God was found in Musselburgh. A temple to Isis, the Egyptian goddess, was restored in London about 250 AD.
