African Emporer Invades in 208 AD

The African emperor Septimus Severus invaded Scotland in 208 AD. His Syrian wife and two sons Caracalla and Geta came with him.

This was the biggest invasion of Scotland and appeared to be concentrated on the East Coast.

New granaries were built at South Shields and both Cramond Fort and Carpow near Abernethy were used to supply the huge army.

The emperor was initially based in York, the nearest legionary fortress to Scotland. It appears he might have visited Carlisle given recent discoveries there. See Tyrian Purple on the Uncovering Roman Carlisle website

More to come.
