Countries that Invaded Scotland

When the Romans conquered a country the people of that country had to pay taxes and contribute soldiers. These soldiers were called Auxiliary Troops and were sent to other countries to fight. This stopped them from deserting or mutineering.

Auxiliary troops in Scotland came from these countries

We know which countries came to Scotland as they wrote this down on religious altars, tombstones, milestones or buildings.

In Corstorphine, we know that the German tribe, the Cugerni, built St John’s Road and Glasgow Road because they left a milestone saying that.

The inscription reads “For the Emperor Caesar Titus Aelius Hadrianus Augustus Antoninus Augustus Pius, father of his country, thrice consul, … the First Cohort of Cugerni (set this up). From Trimontium … miles.”

Along St John’s Road two coins of the same period were found, one in front of St Thomas’ church and the other at the Drumbrae roundabout.
